Science in Early Years

The OA are supporting a new audience to access Science CPD. Welcome to our practitioners in EYFS in Stoke on Trent. We are delighted to launch a new learning community specifically for EYFS practitioners.

Good Science involves Thinking, Doing and Talking with some of the best science taking place in EYFS through responses to curious question asking. Early years teachers know that the best way to increase children’s vocabulary and to develop their language is to give them exciting first-hand experiences. To maximise the transferable understanding from experience we also need to focus on meaningful and memorable as well as the wow factor. Science across the city are launching a new CPD community  to develop EYFS practitioner repertoire of engaging science activities which will help children to develop characteristics of effective learning and their knowledge and understanding of the world through quality speaking and listening.  For Stoke-on-Trent schools there will be two days of direct hands on doing and questioning alongside National EYFS science consultant Jane Winter, gap tasks to try out and consider impact and local EYFS science enthusiasts to encourage school to school engagement whilst experimenting with new approaches. Participants will be provided with opportunities to explore the balance between high quality child led learning and worthwhile adult initiated activities.  We will also think about utilising the ‘outside classroom’ and making the most of local environments and your school available space.  We will consider how stories can be used to provide a meaningful context for science investigations and how scientific enquiry can give, even the youngest children in school, a real reason for writing.
